Effective Literacy Website #3
In 1999 Corbett Harrison launched the
site Writing Fix.com. The website shares innovative ideas focused
on K-12 in Writing. It is a resource-based
website. In 2001 the Northern Nevada
Writing Project created and posted resources and lessons to be shared at the
website. They also included resources
and lessons acquired from workshops, trainings and in-service classes for
teachers.
The homepage tab features Writing Fix
Workshops, Writing Prompts, Mentor Text Lessons, 6 Trait Materials, Across the
Curriculum, WritingFix info, and Email Webmaster. The Writing Fix Workshops highlight lessons
that integrate writing with art and literature, and writing across the
curriculum. A sub-tab under Writing Fix
Workshops that was interesting is the Revision to Teach Critical Thinking. This tab provided detailed lessons to develop
writing skills including word choice, organization & ideas, sentence fluency,
idea development and voice. There are
additional tools provided to supplement each lesson. Tools such as cards, games, charts and
handouts are also provided to enhance the lessons. Additional information about these lessons
can be collected from http://writingfix.com/process/revision.htm
The Writing Prompts tab offers 8
other tabs to collect resources about writing prompts. There are articles and information provided
for the sample lesson plans. Writing
prompts for daily journals and writer’s journals can be accessed easily. There are a variety of interactive word games
provided, including the noun game, the verb game, the memory game, the feeling
game and etc.
The 6 Trait Materials tab offers
useful information and resources about traits to develop writing skills
including voice, word choice, and sentence fluency. The sub-tab for sentence fluency provides
additional links to access to lesson plans, resources and tools to teach a particular
trait or skill. Details and specifics can be acquired from http://writingfix.com/6_traits/sentence_fluency.htm#transitions.
Writing Fix can be another tool for
teachers to help students develop their writing skills. There are lesson plans, resources, games,
information and articles to aid teachers with the support needed when writing
or planning their lessons. It is free
and easy to navigate. To learn more
about Writing Fix go to http://writingfix.com/index.htm.
